Replacing the old with the new, the corner of Yonge and Bloor is getting a facelift that is going to be iconic in a whole new way! Forest Hill attended the community meeting for a first glimpse at the proposed One Bloor West development and we couldn’t help but be impressed with what we were hearing.
Standing 80 stories high, The One will be Canada’s tallest tower, aside from the CN Tower of course, and perhaps its most expensive. It was evident that developer Sam Mizrahi will spare no expense in elevating their design to elite status.
The One will be comprised of a commercial ground floor—restaurant and retail space—pierced by a public atrium reaching up through eight levels, topped by a tower of residences. Below ground the building will connect to the PATH system and also connect directly to the subway line.
Mizrahi made it clear that they are placing a big emphasis on the ground floor as being a very public space much like the Time Warner Building in New York. On top of being a social space to eat and shop, public art will be incorporated into the space in order to make the experience interactive and tactile.
The design by Foster Partners and CORE Architects will feature a steel exoskeleton that will make the structure itself a focal point. Instead of balconies, the building will be completed with “winter gardens,” semi enclosed outdoor spaces, so you can enjoy the view all year long. Plus, sidewalks around the building will be expanded in order to maintain the strong sense of public space that they are trying to accomplish.
It was also evident that Mizrahi is taking extra care to heed concerns from the community over the controversial demolition of the iconic Stollery’s building. Mizrahi made it clear that he will be preserving pieces of original material to incorporate into a monument that will stand in the completed building. Mizrahi is clearly taking gestures towards heritage by taking history and making new history with it!
