Yorkville has evolved tremendously over the years from a village into a gritty bohemian cultural enclave, then into a chic shopping destination, and now into one of the most sought after live-work-play-shop locales in all of Canada. With its success, Bloor-Yorkville's borders continue to expand as new developments on the fringes of the neighbourhood adopt the 'Yorkville' moniker. As the area continues to grow both physically and in popularity, there are many up and coming developments in the works for the posh Bloor-Yorkville area and its surroundings that are worth noting.
In the southern part of Yorkville, residents are moving into Camrost-Felcorp's The New Residences of Yorkville Plaza. The WZMH Architects-led project has converted the former 31-storey Four Seasons hotel at the southeast corner of Avenue Road and Yorkville into a new condominium tower.
To the immediate north, excavation continues for the second phase of the Four Seasons redevelopment dubbed Cumberland at Yorkville Plaza. Construction of the 38-storey, Page + Steele / IBI Group Architects-designed condominium tower is currently slated for completion in 2017.
In the core of the Yorkville area, and right next to our fabulous office, exterior work is now nearing completion at Alterra and Zinc Developments’ 36Hazelton. Designed by Quadrangle Architects, the new boutique condominium building is notable for incorporating the 1928 façade of St. Basil’s Catholic School into its seven-storey private residence. The first residents are set to move in later this year.
The posh Yorkville neighbourhood is also reclaiming the blocks north of Scollard due to the sheer marketability of the area name. Many projects in the area bear the moniker in some form, including Lifetime Developments' The Yorkville, located on Davenport just east of Avenue Road. The Wallman Architects-designed development is now under construction and will boast 31 storeys upon completion.
Just a short walk to the northwest, Menkes Developments' Pears on the Avenue will be situated at Avenue Road just north of Davenport. The Page + Steele / IBI Group Architects is set to rise 20 storeys and contain 175 condominium units upon completion.
With so much happening in this relatively compact area, 2015-2016 is promising to be an exciting time for those living, working, shopping or dining in this popular neck of the woods.
